What is "Champs de Mars"?

The Eiffel Tower overlooks the Champs de Mars, which is a long, open green area in Paris. Champs de Mars mean ‘Field of Mars’ – it is named after the Roman god of war, which is fitting because the area was used as drilling grounds for the French Military. The École Militaire (Military School) is situated along part of it.

You do pronounce the ‘s’ in ‘Mars’ – this is an exception to general French pronunciation rules. As well as referring to the Roman god of war, and the planet ‘Mars’, Mars also means ‘March’ in English.
