|What is "Châteauneuf du Pape"?||
The name dates to the 14th Century when the papacy was relocated to Avignon – ‘pape’ is the French word for ‘pope’. ‘Châteauneuf du Pape’ translates as ‘the Pope’s new castle’.
The AOC wines made in this region are permitted to use 18 types of grape, but Grenache dominates. Although this Appellation allows for both red and white wines, reds dominate.
