‘Coupe’ *(f) is a French word which has several meanings:

• the now out-of-fashion ‘bowl on a stem’ type of champagne glass with a wide and flat mouth;

• a two-door car in the USA;

• an ice-cream bowl;

• a sporting trophy.

Don’t confuse ‘coupe’ and ‘coupé’. Coupé is the word used for a two door car in the UK, and the pronunciation is different. ‘Coup’ without the ‘e’ on the end is a masculine noun, and means ‘knock’ or ‘blow’ in French. Be careful here: the French word for ‘neck’ is ‘cou’, and is pronounced like ‘coup’.

The singular and plural, ‘coupe, coupes’ are pronounced identically in French.
