| What is "Grenache"? | Grenache is the name of a red grape which is cultivated for wine-making all over the world. In Spain it is known as ‘Garnacha’. The grape is best suited to hot dry conditions, and yields a wine with berry flavors, but tends to be lacking in tannins and acid, which is why it is often blended with grapes such as Syrah, Cinsault, and Tempranillo. The high sugar content in Grenache makes it suitable for making vins doux naturels (fortified wines) such as the Banyuls. Grenache is the dominant grape in the Châteauneuf du Pape AOC of the Rhône. Grenache blanc (white grenache) is the fourth most widely planted white grape in France. |
