A Quick Overview Of Phweatt
How to pronounce Phweatt
When I first was asked for the pronunciation of Phweatt I though it might be a prank, but as always I googled it. 'Phweatt' is not a prank or a sound from a cartoon, it is a surname of British origin, and quite unusual. With names and surnames, there is a lot of variation of pronunciation, particularly with names that have left home and travelled to distant shores. All languages vary over time and names are more susceptible to change than most words. For example, Featherstonehaugh slowly transformed and moulded itself to its correct pronunciation which is Fanshaw.
The pronunciation of Phweatt is very likely to be different for branches of the same family tree who have moved to different locations, and whatever the current Phweatt's are calling themselves can be accepted as correct. That said, I can make some definitive pronouncements on how this name may be pronounced. The 'ph' is pronounced like 'f', and the 'w' is silent, as it often is in English words (think of Norwich). The 't' is definitely pronounced. That leaves the vowels up for debate. I would hazard that there are three most likely variations of the pronunciation of Phweatt:
- like fit
- like feet
- like fiat
If anyone with this pronunciation or familiar with it has anything to add, I'd love to hear more.
