| What is "La Tour Eiffel"? | The Eiffel Tower is called ‘La Tour Eiffel’ in French – it is named for the engineer Gustave Eiffel who bought the original designers out, and went on to supervise the construction which was started in January 1887. The Tour Eiffel was created to be the entrance and dominating feature of the 1889 Word’s Fair (‘Exposition Universelle’ in French). The tower was completed in time for the fair, but faced a great deal of criticism both during and after construction. The artistic community of Paris was particularly vocal about what they considered a hideous eyesore on the Parisian landscape. If only they could have looked into the future, they would have seen it become the very emblem of Paris. The Tour Eiffel is is about 81 stories high, and when it was constructed, it was the tallest structure on earth. It stands on the Champs de Mars in Paris. The French nickname for La Tour Eiffel is ‘La Dame de Fer’ which translates to ‘Iron Lady’ in English. I have to wonder whether the artistic objection to the tower would have been more vociferous if Parisians had known it would one day share a nickname with Baroness Margaret Thatcher? |
