| What is "Mescal"? | ‘Mescal’ is a spirit similar to ‘tequila‘, also made from the sap of the ‘agave‘ plant, but somewhat coarser. If it has a worm or other insect in it, it’s definitely ‘mescal’, and not tequila. The Mexican Standards Authority prohibits the addition of insects and larvae to ‘tequila‘. Most of the mescal with a worm comes from the Oaxaca province of Mexico.
