What is "Muscat"?

Muscat is an ancient white grape variety which is known as Moscato in Italian. It is widely planted, and produces a very sweet, oily and complex dessert wines.

The most renowned of the Muscat grapes in the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains which is used to make the Italian sweet sparkling wines known as Asti. Greek muscat from the island of Samos is also well regarded.
