| What is "Place de la Concorde"? | The Place de la Concorde was designed in 1755. It is the largest square in Paris, and is situated at the eastern end of the Champs Elysées. There are two beautiful buildings on the Place de la Concorde: The French Naval Ministry and the Hôtel de Crillon. The Obelisk once stood at the entrance to the Luxor Temple in Egypt. It stands where the guillotine was placed during the French Revolution, and many of the most famous victims of the Revolution were dispatched here, including Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, and let us not forget Robespierre who had sent so many to their death before him. There are two fountains in the square, built of the theme of ‘rivers and seas’. They are known simply as the ‘Fontaines de la Concorde’. To the west of the square, you will find the Jardins des Tuileries.
