| What is "vin de paille"? | Vin de Paille is French for ‘straw wine’. This type of wine is very much associated with the Jura region of France. Very ripe grapes are dried, traditionally on straw mats. This concentrates the sugars, and wine made from these grapes in sweet and high in alcohol. Similar wines are made in other European countries – Vin Santo from Italy is particularly well known. Please click on the links for pronunciation details and more information: The plural, ‘Vins de Paille’ (straw wine) is pronounced like the singular in French. There is no precise phonetic spelling of ‘paille’ for English speakers, because we don’t have this sound. Aim to get it substantially correct if you aren’t familiar with the sound – it is, in any event, quite a subtle sound. |
